Point-to-Multipoint WiMAX for Municipal Wireless Networks

Backhaul of data and voice traffic from base stations to mobile switching centers is a costly proposition for cellular operators today, and is certainly a consideration for operators of municipal Wi-Fi networks. Most mobile operators use leased T-1 lines to connect base stations to the wireline network. As fiber connections to base stations become more readily available, high-speed optical transport will become the more cost-effective backhaul solution. Use of wireless technologies for backhaul can be a viable option where fiber is unavailable, provided the wireless equipment can support the high data transport rates required.
