Azurecomm announces mobile WiMAX™ 802.16e Single Sector Base Stations for trials in late 2007

LOS GATOS, CA  May 9, 2007 – Azurecomm, a leading provider of wireless broadband WiMAX, Wi-Fi, Muni-Fi and DOCSIS equipment announced today that trials of its single sector, low cost, 802.16e mobile WiMAX base stations will begin in late 2007.

The AzureMAX-2500™ operates from 2.3 to 2.7 GHz and is a fully Software-Defined (SDR) mobile base station.  Through a series of firmware upgrades, the AzureMAX-2500 will evolve from basic WiMAX compatibility, to feature rich enhanced versions on Azurecomm’s WiMAX product roadmap including 802.16j Multi-hop Mesh Relay providing WiMAX networks with self-backhaul, and 802.16m 1 GBit performance.

James Bertonis, Azure Communication’s CEO said, “The benefit to WiMAX carriers of the AzureMAX-2500 is that it allows operators to quickly and economically deploy improved mobile cell coverage and capacity.  Just as microcells, picocells and distributed antennas have aided 2G cellular operators, the AzureMAX-2500 will provide similar benefits to 4G WiMAX operators.”

Azurecomm’s WiMAX products are all based on the 802.16e mobile WiMAX standard for inter-operability with standard 802.16e CPEs.  For ease of installation, all AzureMAX models are powered by Power over Ethernet and weighs less than 30 kg (14 lbs).  Configuration is easily accomplished via AzureMAX’s GUI wizard that guides the user through a series of steps to complete the installation to an operator’s network.

Geoffrey Giese, Azurecomm’s Vice President of Marketing said, “Having a software-defined radio allows us to quickly add WiMAX enhancements, and is the perfect solution for adding product features and capability without replacing hardware.”

The AzureMAX-2500 contains an integrated single sector antenna and can be equipped with an optional external antenna. The fully NEMA 4 compliant outdoor package provides high reliability coverage at high data throughputs (approx. 35 Mbps at 1 km).  The AzureMAX product roadmap includes the AzureMAX-5800 base station for WISPs, which will support data rates exceeding 70 Mbps at 5.8 GHz.  The AzureMAX-700 will be available for new U.S. and India WiMAX frequencies, and the AzureMAX-3500 is planned for 3.5 GHz international markets.
